Edo Battousai and Hyakujuu Shinkansen

July 10, 2010

Edo receives:
1B Kichibei Kumagai (22, AAA) - minor league contract
CL Sumitomo Takeda (22, AAA) - minor league contract
Hyakujuu's 1st round 2011 draft pick (pick 9, 9th overall: Ietsuna Oyama)

Hyakujuu receives:
SS Mike Brown (26, ML) - $1.75

Since Then:
Kichibei Kumagai did not hit well at all for a first baseman in 2011 (.594 OPS).  His offense improved in 2012 (.714 OPS) and yet again in 2013 (.897 OPS), though on a limited (284 AB) basis.  His hitting was adequate in 2014 (.760).  He was traded to Naha November 19, 2010, then to Shin Seiki December 15, 2013.
Sumitomo Takeda has had a very successful (17-8 W-L) career through 2014.  His 2012 ( 2.25 ERA), 2013 (3.17 ERA), and 2014 (2.86 ERA) statistics underline his brilliant contributions.  He played in the 2014 all-star game.  He won the 2014 Neo-Tokyo Cup.

Mike Brown did not perform as well after the trade (.702 OPS) as he had before the trade (.784 OPS) in 2010.  But he did swipe 28 bases for Hyakujuu in 2010 to compile 44 on the season.  He hit well for a shortstop in 2011 (.752 OPS), and had a remarkable 47 SB.  He did not perform as well in the PEBA (.666 OPS and 15 SB in 319 AB) during 2012.  He was traded to Kuwana August 12, 2011.  He was signed as a free agent to a minor league contract with West Virgina of the PEBA April 8, 2012.  He retired on January 1, 2014.
